Women of color have been breaking ground in podcasting well ahead of the latest boom but there's plenty more to be done. To move towards equity for women of color in podcasting, Spotify US is launching the latest edition of Sound Up, a training program for aspiring podcasters with a great idea.
We recognize that during this unprecedented time of a global pandemic it would not be ideal to bring people together in a classroom environment. Instead, we have decided to expand the Sound Up program into a two-phased approach. We will kick off the program with a virtual training program in 2020 to be followed by an in-person week-long immersive experience in 2021. Our virtual program will take place over the course of 4 weeks with 20 hand-selected attendees receiving a comprehensive introduction to the art of making a podcast. In this virtual workshop, participants will learn about the art of podcast creation, from initial ideation to storytelling, interviewing, editing, and producing from experts in the field. The virtual Sound Up will consist of scheduled live courses, recorded lessons, one-on-one meetings with the Spotify team and facilitators, and light homework assignments. 8 weeks after the completion of virtual classes, participants will submit a final trailer and pitch proposal for the chance to be selected to attend the weeklong in-person Sound Up sessions in 2021. Ten candidates will be selected to join the in-person classroom experience in 2021. All 20 candidates for the virtual program will be provided with a recorder, computer, headphones, and internet access. Applicants are also required to apply as individuals, rather than as shows/groups, and are required to be residents of the US.
Who’s eligible: Anyone who self-identifies as a woman of color, passionate about podcasting, and has a great idea. No prior experience is required -- we’re looking for the best ideas. Attendees are required to participate in all 4 weeks of virtual programming, as well as submit a final portfolio. Participants must also make themselves available to attend the week-long training classes in 2021.
What does it cost: The program is free.
What does it include:
2020: 4 weeks of part-time virtual training - a mixture of live virtual classes, recorded videos, and assignments. This will be a commitment of 8-10 hours a week. All scheduled classes will be in the evenings to accommodate the workweek and the rest is flexible.
2021: Some of our cohort from 2020 will be selected to join us for in-person training in 2021 including 1 week in-person of workshops, panels, and activities around podcasting, led by experts and professionals. Travel to [location], six nights of hotel, and breakfast and lunch each day are included.

Who owns my idea:
All work submitted to or worked on remains the sole property of you, the applicant. This means that either by submitting this application, being accepted, or receiving the final production grants, your ideas and your podcast are YOURS.
